Memphis and Birmingham Trip, 2021

Earlier this year, I took a baseball trip
to Memphis and Birmingham. To the left is Rockey
the Redbird who is the mascot of the Memphis
Redbirds, the AAA affiliate of the St. Louis
Cardinals. Roll over that picture to see the
Birmingham Barons uniform of John "Blue Moon"
Odom, one of the first African American
players for the Birmingham Barons in the
Southern League in 1964.
I also went to Elvis Presley's birthplace
in Tupelo, Mississippi. A statue of a young
Elvis with a guitar is nearby.

Above left is the I Love Memphis sign in downtown Memphis. Rollover that
image to see the Redbird stadium clock at Autozone Park. The above
image is Elvis Presley's birthplace in Tupelo, Mississippi. Rollover that
image to see the welcome sign to Helena, Arkansas right across the Mississippi
River from Tunica, Mississippi. Above right is historic Rickwood Field, the
oldest standing baseball stadium in the U.S. It was built in 1910 and many
great ballplayers of all races played ball there.
On the left is a guitar made out of a cigar box at the Blues from the
Arkansas Delta exhibit. Roll over that image to see the entrance to Autozone
Park in Memphis, the 119th stadium where I have seen professional baseball.
Below left it the Negro Southern League Museum in Birmingham, Alabama.
This is where Blue Moon Odom's uniform, above, is on display. Roll over this
image and you will see a hologram of Satchel Paige pitching.
As you walk around downtown Tupelo, Mississippi, you will see guitars
featuring Elvis Presley. Below right, at historic Rickwood Field, advertisers
get into the spirit using ads that look like they are from early last century.
Rollover that image to see the "Note for Hope" mural in downtown Memphis.

Blues from the Arkansas Delta exhibit
is at the Cultural Center in Helena,
Arkansas. Rollover that image to see
a Union Civil War cannon from the
battlefield where the Union held
off a Confederate attack. The Union
controlled Helena during most of the
Civil War.
On your way to Helena, make sure you
stop at the Blue and White in Tunica,
Mississippi for a delicious breakfast.
Rollover that image to see the bridge
over the mighty Mississippi River that
will take you to Helena.
Above right is Regions Field in
Birmingham, the 120th stadium where
I have seen professional baseball. It
is a beautiful stadium built in 2013.
On the left and right is artwork in
Memphis honoring the music of
Highway 61.

The pitcher in the picture below
is Birmingham Barons' pitcher,
Konnor Pilkington, pitching to
Montgomery Biscuits lead off
hitter, Miles Mastrobuoni.
      Rollover that image to see
Memphis Redbirds pitcher, Angel
Rondon, pitch to Louisville Bats
second baseman, Max Shrock.
      Finally, my trip to Memphis
was affected by the I-40 Bridge
over the Mississippi River being
out of commission due to a crack
in its structure.
